The Tides, South Beach, Miami, Florida, USA
The Tides Miami has long been considered one of Art Deco architect L. Murray Dixon’s true masterpieces. And a 2008 overhaul by star designer Kelly Wearstler elevated the interiors to high art. In lieu of the oft crass SoBe glitz, you’ll find a sophisticated mix of oversized driftwood sculptures atop Deco credenzas and custom leather chesterfields fronting brass nautical tables. The textures are luxe but the palette is an understated homage to the sugary sand out front.
Facilities & Activities:
Public spaces are no less impressive, whether the mezzanine deck with its fifty-foot pool, or the baby-blue rooftop patio, which feels a bit like the top of the world. The restaurant and bar are elegant as well as eclectic, and you never know who you’ll see, given Miami’s current status as the center of all things hip in America. The staff does a fine job maintaining a discreet atmosphere, so even if that is Bono at the next table, don’t expect a mad rush of autograph seekers.
Rooms & Suites:
The Tides hotel’s offers 45 spacious suites, all with ocean views, feel more like beachfront apartments than hotel rooms thanks to large walk-in closets and comfortable living spaces. The monochrome sand-inspired colors let the rich textures shine, from desks that resemble braided shells to overstuffed leather armchairs and petrified wood side tables. Frette linens and Vrai bath products add to the mellow spa-like vibe. King beds and 42-inch plasma TVs are standard, and in fact look barely big enough in these vast spaces.
The hotel’s culinary team serves up an eclectic blend of international and American favorites, tapping the bounty of the region’s seafood and fresh produce to craft menus that merge creativity, comfort and imagination.
